Make Self-Care Urgent. Be Good To Yourself
It can be so hard for people to be good to themselves and focus on their emotional self-care
Of course, this is not true for EVERY person. But self-care is a challenge for MANY. It’s often talked about, but what does it actually mean? Is self-care putting your needs before everyone else and everything else? And how does that relate to mental WELLNESS? Self-care is the practice of taking action to maintain or improve your own health. Wellness refers to actively practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to achieve better physical and mental health outcomes. Both self-care and wellness can help you thrive instead of feeling like you are just surviving day-to-day.
Are things getting in the way of your self-care?
The need for safety– Are you struggling to take action? Taking a step or several might result in not having all the answers to every question and making mistakes. Yup, those dreaded mistakes! It IS safer to stay put, but that does not mean it’s more comfortable, more satisfying, or more worthwhile, just that it’s what you know. And sometimes, the fear of failing can really get in the way of changing things even when they are not working for you.
Being everyone’s rock or just creating rocks- Are you struggling to find time because you’re taking care of everyone else? Or do you have many barriers that keep getting in the way of prioritizing yourself? Have you considered what would happen if you did focus on your mental wellness and emotional self-care and how that could help you to make behavioral changes? Maybe you need help to learn how to delegate, reprioritize, or to learn how to give yourself a break. But by focusing all of your energy elsewhere, little or NONE goes towards you and your own needs. This can lead to burnout, being overextended, and neglecting your own needs.
